How To Do Lashes on Mature Clients

Everyone deserves to feel glam no matter their age.

In beauty spaces, we often see mainly young models on social media and in advertisements. And though these women do make a large portion of clientele, there is also a massive opportunity for lash artists to cater to women aged 45 and older!

I truly believe that lash extensions are timeless and add a beautiful glow to anyone’s look. With that being said, there are factors that should be taken into consideration when working on older clients.

Things like our lashes thinning and the extra skin around the eyes all impact how a lash artist should apply lash extensions on older clients. That’s not to say mature clients can’t rock volume sets because more power to them! But in general, lash artists should be aware of these tips when doing lashes on mature clients.

1) Opt for lighter lashes

As we age, our bodies start to change. For instance, we absorb fewer nutrients, cell turnover starts to slow, and even our hair follicles shrink! This natural process causes our hair (and lashes) to thin and become more brittle.

Of course, these changes are entirely natural and it’s worth mentioning that nobody should feel shame for aging – it’s completely normal! It is important, however, to change the techniques we used to better suit the client's needs.

A general rule of thumb is to use lighter lashes when working on older clients. If the lashes are brittle or weak, you do not want to risk damaging them by using an extension that’s too heavy. Instead of using heavy fans or thick extensions, try something light like a .03 diameter lash. Not only will this be healthier on the lashes, but it’ll give a wispy natural look that looks stunning on mature clients!

2) Consider using brown lashes

Like the hair on our head, our lashes start to lighten as we age too! Older clients' lashes may look more blonde or brown rather than black. For these reasons, they might prefer a set that uses brown lashes. Pitch-black extensions have a tendency to look over the top on light natural lashes, but as I mentioned, no shame to the women who prefer that look! The good thing though, is that brown lashes are also one of my favorite lash trends for 2022, and your client will be happy you’ve put them on the latest and greatest.

3) Use gel pads and sensitive tape

The skin around the eyes is one of the thinnest areas on our body, and it gets thinner with age. Mature clients have more sensitive skin and lash artists should be aware of this. I know some artists like to use tape for the bottom lashes, but this will tug on the extra skin when pulling it off. During your sets, I recommend always using gel eye pads for the bottom lashes and sensitive tape on the lids. Being extra gentle should be top of mind!

4) Use lash serums

Let me introduce you to one of my favorite products at the moment: Rad Lash Serum. This is heaven-sent for anyone looking to grow longer, stronger lashes. Our natural lash serum uses plant-based amino acids and antioxidants to strengthen and stimulate growth. It’s vegan, cruelty-free, fragrance-free, and 100% safe on eyelash extensions! Truly the perfect product to sell to your mature clients who want to keep their lashes healthy while wearing eyelash extensions. And, if you buy 10 or more, you automatically get 30% off your order.
